Updated: Fixed the nose, jawline and shading a bit. She looks a big more human now whoo. OTL

Alternate Title: Tangerine Clouds in a Meloncholy Sky
Get it... melons... yeah.

So originally based off this little drawing from 2 months ago or so
I decided to just use the same... portrait style I guess to show the different styles :T

I'm still experimenting with semi-realism of course. XD This is only my... second time this year messing with it. Still not satisfied. OTL

First time drawing Cisaya in this... style thing. I gave her somewhat Asian features because... I guess she'd be at least half-Asian if she were real. XD I mean... her name is freakin Cisaya after all...

I know most people don't like it when I draw semi-realism =w= Mainly because it creeps them out or something. Apparently it falls under uncanny valley....
So yeah although it's pretty discouraging that people will like one of my 10 minute chibis over a 10 hour portrait like this, but I don't really mind anymore. I'll keep practicing anyways cuz I want to. XD

Oh god another long description why do I ramble so much...

Dunno, to me, drawing in anime style is pretty... restricting after a while. I read somewhere that once you get to a certain level and have settled in your style, it's hard to improve and get out of that.

I don't like being stuck in a rut.

And as much as I love working on DH and drawing in anime style for it, it gets really... boring after a while. I don't really like the turnout either, and then call my art shit etc etc.

So yeah, I know plenty of people probably go through the same thing. I think my way to deal with it is to just try something different. Go out of your comfort zone, study some reference pictures, look at a couple tutorials, and just do it. xD The result will probably never be as good as you want it, but at least you're trying. =w=b
Some people work better with getting criticism and pointers, but not me. XD I prefer to just study and try everything out on my own. I go through trial and error rather than have someone dictate what's wrong and right to me.

Yeah I'm bad at motivational speaking I suck LOL //rolls away

Cisaya belongs to me

I'm so jealous of how beautiful this is that I might cry oh my gosh Sami how. HOW. This was beautiful before but even more so now I mean wow aggggh -throws art out the window- I think her eyes are the best part because they're so beautiful oi...

P.S. If you'd rather not bother with the eyes, just don't make her smile, because they're perfect for a neutral face.
Samuraiflame Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2012
Yeah I think so too OTL in fact she wasn't even smiling when I first started drawing so I guess that's why the eyes are still like that
Cheshire-Shadow Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2012
At least they're very lovely eyes; even if she hadn't been smiling, they'd still be commendable. :3

I think the reason for the uncanny-valley effect is actually your problem with muscles-- specifically, how they move and shift in relation to each other. Also, her nose (and the dip from nose to lips) look like they're glued on rather than part of her face.

The lips should seem stretched rather than just long, so I suggest making the lower part of the nose-lip dip broader in relation to it, and make her mouth a little higher. Shadows around the mouth also help make it look like she's really smiling.

And don't be afraid to shrink her eyes a little; you know how us asians look when we smile. XD

Also, look up references for neck anatomy, and collarbone placement, because in relation to her shoulders, either her neck is too long or her collarbone is too high, and her neck looks flat.

Finally, try to get a feel for the perspective going on-- her eyes, hair, jaw and lips seem to be going for a 3/4ths view, but the rest appears to be fully facing us.

Aside from all that, though, I really like the colors you use for skin. I can never get that porous, "living" look in my own work; they may as well all be vampires. XD How do you do it?

(P.S. Wasn't sure if it's on purpose or not, so I ask; is she supposed to have Jareth hair?)
Samuraiflame Featured By Owner Aug 30, 2012
ASDfghjkl so true LOL STUPID AZN SMILES...

XD I think I'll mess around with it now, thanks =u=
Hee the skin texture was actually surprisingly easy OTL I just used a couple chalky brushes and dabbed them randomly. One colour was a little darker like the shading I used and then I used a lighter whiter-beige colour so it'd look a bit like skin flakes? I think. XD;

(What's a Jareth? ;_; Lolz I dunno I just made her hair like how it would usually be in animu style)
